NAME OF STARTUP: Optery
FOUNDED IN (Year): 2020
FOUNDER’S NAME: Lawrence Gentilello
THE IDEA: What is the problem being solved by your startup / business?:
Optery is opt out software that removes your home address and other private info from the Internet
THE FOUNDER’S STORY: When and how did you come up with the idea for the business?:
Most data brokers make it intentionally difficult for consumers to opt out. It’s challenging and time consuming, especially since most data brokers operate in the shadows by design, unknown to the average consumer.
We wanted to make it really easy to see a report of all the places data brokers have posted your private information online, and provide free and paid options for having your profiles removed.
WHO IS THE CUSTOMER: What is the typical profile of your target customer? Where would they be located?:
We cover over 160+ data brokers, more than any other personal information removal service on the market. We encourage people already using a competing service to sign up for our free tier and have us check their work.
On average, we find 20 – 40 profiles exposed that our competitors have missed. Anyone can create a free account to receive a personalized Exposure Report summarizing where your information is posted online and being openly sold by data brokers.
LESSONS TO SHARE: What 3 key lessons from your startup journey you’d like to share with aspiring entrepreneurs?:
Our mission is to put consumers in control of their personal data, and we have a vision for a safer world through digital privacy. Our long-term vision is to enable consumers and data brokers to interact in fairness and transparency in a way that honours consumers’ preferences and legal rights.
